| Missouri, the Show Me state In 1927, Charles Lindbergh made a historic flight across the Atlantic Ocean. A group of St. Louis, Missouri, businessmen helped Lindbergh raise the money to buy his plane. To thank them, Lindbergh named his small plane The Spirit of Saint Louis. St. Louis...Home of the Cardinals. |

| Nebraska...The Cornhusker state Lincoln, Nebraska's capital, was named in honor of President Abraham Lincoln. Pioneers heading west on the Oregon Trail had to cross the vast, flat, seemingly endless plains of Nebraska. Finally the pioneers would see a wonderful sight—a 150-foot-tall rock! Chimney Rock near the North Platte River in western Nebraska marks the end of the "endless" plains. |

| Kansas...The Sunflower state During the days of the Wild West, the cowboys who came through Dodge City, Kansas, liked to kick up their heels. There were often brawls and even gunfights. Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson were among the famous lawmen who tried to tame Dodge City. The First United Methodist Church in Hutchinson, Kansas, was built during the state's notorious grasshopper plague of 1874. As a result, thousands of grasshoppers made their way into the concrete mixed for the foundation. |

| Oklahoma...The Sooner state Oklahoma's early settlers were called Sooners, because they jumped the gun and staked their claim to land before the territory was officially open to white settlement.
