Bachelor Wing, Son of Daniel Wing & Anna Ewer
Bachelor Wing (Daniel Wing, Rev. John, Matthew), born December 10, 1671
at Sandwich, Barnstable Co., Massachusetts. Bachelor died in 1740 at Hanover,
Plymouth Co., Massachusetts at the age of 68. Bachelor married Joanna Hatch.
The exact date of their marriage is unknown, but we do know that their first
child was born in November of 1694. Joanna was born March 21, 1661/62 at
Scituate, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts, the daughter of Jeremiah Hatch and
Mary Hewes. Joanna died on May 20, 1761 in Hanover at the age of 99.
It is thought that in 1699/1700, Bachelor Wing moved himself and his family
to Scituate, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts. In the first book of the town records
of Scituate is the record: "Feb. 15, 1714-15. Israel Hatch, Bachelor Wing
and Joseph Leechfield were charged to serve on the jury traills at the next
County Court at Plymouth." On June 7, 1727, Hanover and Abington were
organized from the original town of Scituate, where Bachelor Wing and his
family lived at a place called Drinkwater in the westerly part of Hanover.
Jeremiah Hatch, Joanna Hatch Wing's brother had a mill on the bridge between
Hanson and Hanover, over the Drinkwater River and the bridge was known as
Hatch's Bridge. (Now known as Teagues Bridge).
Joanna Hatch Wing was baptized in Scituate as a Congregationalist on June
10, 1679. She was considered a member in good standing of the 2nd Church
of Scituate where Rev. William Witherell was the pastor. It seems evident
that Bachelor did not follow his Father's religion of Quaker beliefs.
There is a family tradition that maintains that Bachelor Wing and his
wife, Joanna Hatch were cousins. There is probably something to this that
bears more investigtion. We do know that Bachelor's cousin, Nathaniel Wing,
son of Stephen Wing, married Sarah Hatch, daughter of Jonathan Hatch and
Sarah Rowley. At this writing though, Nathaniel and Bachelor were the only
ones of this generation to marry into the Hatch family. The tradition may
be one that comes from England.
Bachelor Wing gave his brother Jashub a receipt for the legacy that was
left to him from his father's will...the Barnstable records reflect the
following: "I Batchlor or Bachelor Wing of Hanover, received the legacy,
etc. of my brother Jashub."
Bachelor made his own will in Hanover on April 15, 1740 in which he mentions
his son Sylvanus as the sole executor, his wife Joanna, his son Ebenezer
and his daughter, Thankful Jones. Bachelor's will was probated in Plymouth,
Plymouth Co., Massachsetts and proved on June 3, 1740.
Bachelor Wing and Joanna Hatch had the following children:
1. Ebenezer Wing, born November 20, 1694
2. Sylvanus Wing, born October 13, 1697
3. Thankful Wing, born about 1702 at Scituate.
4. Mary Wing, born October 16, 1704
