Ebenezer Wing (Stephen, Rev. John, Matthew)



Ebenezer Wing (Stephen Wing, Rev. John, Matthew), born July 11, 1671 at Sandwich, Barnstable Co., Massachusetts, in the Old Fort House. Ebenezer married Elizabeth Backus on February 23, 1698/99 at Sandwich. They were married by Mr. Stephen Skeffe. Elizabeth was born Janauary 5, 1671/72 at Wells, York Co., Maine, the daughter of Francis Backus (Backhouse) and Rebecca Cross. Elizabeth died in 1758 at the approximate age of 81. It is believed that Ebenezer was born and died at the Old Fort House in Sandwich.

At this time there is not much known about Ebenezer. According to "The Backus Families of Early New England", Ebenezer Wing was appointed the guardian of Elizabeth Backus's brother Daniel at Daniel's request. Daniel Backus was born in 1691 and according to the history was living in Dartmouth as late as 1719 when he released to his brother Nathaniel Backus certain property inherited from his father.

In 1719, Nathaniel was recorded in Deeds of York County, Maine, as purchasing from his brother Daniel of Dartmouth, and from his brother-in-law Ebenezer Wing of Sandwich, certain land formerly held by his father Francis Backus, "late of Saco".

Nathaniel died Oct. 2, 1727, leaving a will which mentioned land at Saco as well as his house, land, and other property at Sandwich. His wife Remember and his brother-in-law Ebenezer were designated as his administrators.

Ebenezer Wing was made a freeman of Sandwich in 1700 and his occupation was Husbandman. His will was dated January 1, 1731 and was proven May 5, 1738. He named his wife, Elizabeth, executrix. He mentions his son Stephen and sons, Samuel, Joshua, Joseph and daughters Rebeckah and Sarah.

Ebenezer Wing and Elizabeth Backus (Backhouse) had the following children:

1. Stephen Wing, born August 2, 1700 at Sandwich, Old Fort House.

2. Rebecca Wing, born May 29, 1702 at Sandwich, Old Fort House.

3. Samuel Wing, born March 24, 1703/04 at Sandwich, Old Fort House

4. Joseph Wing, born January 1705/05 at Sandwich, Old Fort House, died April 11, 1738. Joseph never married.

5. Joshua wing, born September 9, 1706 at Sandwich, Old Fort House.

6. Sarah Wing, born March 4, 1708/09 at Sandwich, Old Fort House.

7. John Wing, born January, 1709 at Sandwich, Old Fort House. John died October 28, 1720 at the age of 10, although the Hoxie Manuscripts say that he died in January 28, 1728 at the age of 19.
