Jashub Wing , son of Daniel Wing and Anna Ewer

Jashub Wing (Daniel Wing, Rev. John, Matthew), born March 30, 1674 at Sandwich, Barnstable Co., Massachusetts. At this time we have no knowledge of when Jashub died, but we know he was still living in 1740. Jashub married twice. His first marriage was to Anna Hoxie on February 11, 1700/01 at Sandwich. The marriage was solemnized before Stephen Skeffe, Esquire, Justice of the Peace. Anna Hoxie was born January 25, 1668/69 at Sandwich, the daughter of Lodowick Hoxie and Mary Presbury. Anna died December 16, 1721 at Sandwich at the age of 52.

After Anna's death, Jashub married Dorothy Butler on April 30, 1729. This is somewhat complicated because Dorothy Butler was the widow of Jashub's nephew, Joseph Wing, son of Jashub's half-brother, John Wing, the son of Daniel Wing and Hannah Swift.

In 1902, a certain, Henry W. Cummings Lain, who was the Corresponding Secretary for the New England Historical and Genealogical Society wrote the Owl:

"I have an old inter-leaved almanac written during the year 1729 by William Sanford, the town clerk of Portsmouth, R. I. This mentions births, deaths and marriages of many of his relatives and friends who were Quakers. Among the items is: '1729 April 30 Jashub Wing and Dorothy married.' Can you tell me who Dorothy was?"

Mr. Lain's question is answered by the following abstract from a deed dated, Sept. 1740, found in book 34, page 46, Plymouth Records:

"Jashub Wing of Sandwich and Dorothy his wife in consideration of a bond given to said Dorothy by her children, William, Joseph and Elizabeth Wing, of a valuable consideration agreeable to her demand: Daniel Wing, farmer and Elizabeth his wife, and Joseph Wing of Sandwich for consideration of 80 pounds paid to said Daniel and Elizabeth, 120 pounds to said Joseph Wing by William Wing of Rochester, son of said Dorothy and brother to said Elizabeth and Joseph, the land of Joseph Wing of Rochester, former husband of the said Dorothy and father of said William, Joseph and Elizabeth."

Jashub was 47 years old when his first wife, Anna Hoxie died. Jashub did not remarry for about 9 years, making him 55 or 56 years old when he married Dorothy Butler. Dorothy Butler Wing had been a widow for some 14 or 15 years, her husband Joseph Wing having died in December of 1715. No doubt the document above was written in an effort to protect the inheritance of Dorothy's children because of the confusion that might arise out of the same last names. Joseph Wing and Dorothy Butler had 4 children together: Elizabeth, William, Joseph & James.

It isn't as though the relationship wasn't complicated enough when Elizabeth Wing, daughter of Joseph Wing and Dorothy Butler married Daniel Wing, the son of Jashub Wing and Anna Hoxie. In fact, it may have been during Daniel and Elizabeth Wing's courtship that Jashub and Dorothy were re-aquainted, if indeed they ever grew distant from one another. Jashub and Dorothy may have both derived a certain comfort and companionship from their shared lives and history and may have decided that they would be far happier together than to both remain single.

Dorothy Butler was born about 1687 at Sandwich, the daughter of Daniel Butler and Elizabeth House. Her sister, Mehitable Butler was the wife of Elisha Wing, son of Stephen Wing and Sarah Briggs.  So that when Jashub and Dorothy married, Jashub became his son's father-in-law and his cousin Elisha's brother-in-law. Dorothy Butler Wing became her daughter's mother-in-law and her sister, Mehitable, became her sister-in-law. I like to think that everyone was happy with this arrangement and that two people who might have been lonely by being single were made much happier by joining together and living out their lives with one another.

Jashub Wing was a Quaker, like his father before him. Jashub was a member of the Spring Hill Friends Meeting at Sandwich. In 1700 Jashub was admitted a townsman in Sandwich. On March 10, 1697/98 Jashub inherited the homestead estate of Daniel Wing, which is decribed as "lands, meadows, goods, chattels, sheep houses, barns, fences, etc.,". There was also a provision in the will that Jashub must care for and maintain his mother, Anna Ewer Wing for as long as she remained a widow of his father, Daniel Wing. In addition, Jashub was also listed as executor of his father's estate even though he was the youngest child of Daniel's large brood of children.

Newell Hoxie stated the Jashub Wing lived on a farm in Sandwich, west of the Alms House Farm and that the house stood near the foot of Brown Bread Hill. It supposedly was still standing as alate as 1887.

Jashub Wing made his will on August 30, 1725 at Sandwich, which was written before he married for the second time. In the will he mentions his three sons, Daniel, Joseph and Samuel and his daughter, Experience. Jashub also appointed his brother-in-law, Gideon Hoxie to be sole Executor and the guardian of his youngest son Samuel who was not yet 21 years of age at the time the will was written. It is interesting to wonder what motivated Jashub to write a will at that time. Jashub lived at least another 15 years after his will was written....perhaps longer, because some sources state that Jashub did not die until December of 1746.

It may be well to bear in mind that when Jashub wrote his will he had lost his wife and two children...both children, Barnabus and Mary Wing died in 1723. It could very well be that Jashub suffered from a depression of sorts that led him to believe that he might not live longer. If that is the case, it makes the marriage between him and his nephew's widow an even happier event. Jashub Wing and Anna Hoxie had the following children: 1. Abigail Wing, born October 7, 1702 at Sandwich, Barnstable Co., Massachusetts.

2. Daniel Wing, born March 30, 1704

3. Joseph Wing, born May 3, 1706

4. Experience Wing, born March 8, 1707/08

5. Barnabas Wing, born June 27, 1710, died April of 1723 at the age of 12.

6. Jabez Wing, born about 1713

7. Mary Wing, born June 16, 1716 at Sandwich, died February 20, 1723 at the age of 7.

8. Samuel Wing, born June 3, 1719.
