John Wing, son of Stephen Wing & Sarah Briggs
John Wing was born September 25, 1661 at the Old Fort House in Sandwich,
Plymouth, Massachusetts to Stephen Wing and Sarah Briggs.
John Wing stayed fairly busy because we believe that he was married 3 times. His first wife was Mary Perry, the daughter of Edward Perry and Mary Freeman. John Wing and Mary Perry married on July 22, 1685 in Sandwich, Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts. Mary Perry was born in Sandwich, Plymouth Colony about 1659 and she died March 6, 1714 at the age of 55 years. Strangely enough, or luckily enough, considering on your viewpoint, every wife that John would have would be named Mary. His second wife was Mary Banister, who he married in Newport, Newport, Rhode Island on October 6, 1715. Austin's Vital Statistics of Rhode Island states that "John Wing of Sandwich married Mary Bannister of Newport, Oct. 6, 1715." Mary Bannister was born in Newport, Newport Co., Rhode Island about March of 1660 and she died at the age of 39 years at Newport on June 12, 1720. Mary Bannister was known as a "Public Friend". The Friends' records at Spring Hill report in June, 1719, that "Mary, wife of John took a certificate to Pennsylvania, Maryland and elsewhere." Not only does this indicate that Mary Bannister Wing was an independent sort, but that she was probably a traveling missionary for the Friends. When John Wing finally married for the third time, the records indicate that it must have been Mary Mowry Coggeshall, the widow of Daniel Coggeshall. There was some dispute about the will of Joshua Coggeshall, the son of Mary Mowry Coggeshall...the legal proceedings were started by Joshua's widow. In the book "Gleanings from Newport Court Files" under the year 1736, #657 is the following: "Mary Wing now resident in North Kingstown, widow, by Henry Bull, attorney, vs. Mary Coggeshall of Portsmouth, widow and executrix of Joshua Coggeshall who was admistrator of his deceased brother Peleg Coggeshall, re one-sixth part of £600 left by Peleg Coggeshall, who died intestate on or about August 1730 without issue, leaving surviving the plaintiff (who is) his mother, two brothers: Joshua and Daniel Coggeshall, and three sisters: Mary, wife of Samuel Clarke, Anne, wife of Clarke Rodman, and Phebe, wife of Henry Bull. Docket No. 22." and the following: "Josiah Coggeshall of Newport, cordwainer, on 26 May 1736 testified that he knew Mary, widow of Daniel Coggeshall, kept possession of the houses and land of her sd husband from his death and that she kept her family of children and servant with her until she married John Wing of Sandwich." I must stress that the information about Mary Mowry Coggeshall is my own conclusion...this requires more research. I do know that Mary Mowry Coggeshall married Daniel Coggeshall on October 23, 1689 and that they had, among others, Joshua Coggeshall born June 3, 1691 and a son, Peleg Coggeshall, born April 21, 1712. Daniel Coggeshall was the son of Daniel Coggeshall and Joan West. Joshua Coggeshall was married to Mary Spooner. John married Mary Mowry Coggeshall after 1720. He names his wife Mary in his will that was dated September 12, 1728. John Wing was a weaver by way of occupation. When John Wing married his first wife, Mary Perry, Mary's father, Edward Perry gave the couple a small tract of land at Scorton Neck upon which John Wing built his house. The Hoxie manuscripts describe his house as "the last house in Scorton near the swamp in Joseph Ewer's field." Unfortunately this house remained standing for many, many years until it was destroyed by fire. It was also described by Professor Hoxie as "manorial in its architecture and genteel in its colonial antiquity." John Wing died in 1728...his will is dated September 12, 1728 and was proved on October 23, 1728. In his will he makes his son Edward executor. John mentions his wife Mary, sons Edward and John, daughter Sarah Wadey, wife of Humphrey Wadley and granddaughter, Deborah Barker, whose guardian was Samuel Barker of Falmouth. John Wing and Mary Perry had the following children: 1. Deborah Wing, born August 21, 1686 at Scorton Neck, Massachusetts. 2. Edward Wing, born March 3, 1690 at Scorton Neck, Massachusetts. 3. Sarah Wing, born February 13, 1693/94 at Scorton Neck, Massachusetts. 4. John Wing, born March 10, 1701 at Scorton Neck, Massachusetts. |
