Christopher Almy and Elizabeth Cornell


Elizabeth Cornell married Christopher Almy. Christopher Almy was born 1632, died 30 January, 1713: Will proved 9th February, 1713, disposing of a considerable estate; Freeman, 1658; in 1667 bought land with others of the Indians at Monmouth, New Jersey, where he lived some years, returning to Rhode Island before 1680, however; in 1690 he was Deputy to the General court from Portsmouth, Rhode Island, and the same year chosen Assistant; 27th February, 1690, chosen and elected Governor but refused to serve for reasons satisfactory to the Assembly; this was the first election for Governor since the deposition of Andros; 24th August, 1693, Messenger from Rhode Island to England, delivered the address from Rhode Island and won his petition to Queen Mary; he bought land in Pocasset (Tiverton) from the Indian Sachems; he was at the time a "Plymouth Colonist" and identified with Freetown, which included Fall River; married 9th July, 1661, Elizabeth Cornell, who died 1708, daughter of Thomas and Rebecca Cornell of Hertford, England. Thomas Cornell was an Ensign, 1642-44.
