CONTENT WING
DAUGHTER OF ABRAHAM WING AND ANTIS WOOD
Content Wing, daughter of Abraham Wing and Antis Wood was born at Quaker Hill, Dutchess Co., New York on April 1, 1755. Content was married twice. She married (1) Jacob Hicks about 1769 and she married (2) James Higson (Hixson). Content, first married at the age of fourteen to Jacob Hicks would be a widow by the time she was nineteen or twenty. Jacob had the management of the mills that were owned by Daniel Jones and Abraham Wing. It is believed that he died in either the latter part of 1773 or early in 1774. By the time Jacob died, he and Content had two daughters. After Jacobs death, Content married James Hickson (commonly written as Higson. According to Conway Wing, James wa a thorough patriot, who was taken prisoner with Andrew Lewis, his brother-in-law and others, and taken to Canada. After running the gauntlet in the hands of the Indians they were rescued and confined for awhile in prison, but through the influence of loyalist kinsmen they were kindly treated, and sent home at the end of the war. After his return he purchased and lived upon a farm a mile north of Glen's Falls. He and his wife adhered to the Quakers, using the common form of Quaker language. Described by someone who knew Content well, "Aunt Tenty," as her husband called her, said that she "was a very chatty, agreeable person." Like her sister, Deborah, Content knew and was supposedly an intimate friend and confidant of poor Jane McCrea. They often exchanged visits and after the massacre the Indians exhibited at her father's house, "Jenny's scalp with its long tresses of golden hair." Content and James had three children; two daughters and one son. The son supposedly moved west. |
